About Jhalana

The Jhalana Leopard Safari, also known as Jhalana Leopard Safari Park, is India's first Leopard Reserve, situated in the city of Jaipur, Rajasthan. Nestled among the ancient Aravali Hills, Jhalana was designated as a leopard reserve in 2017. Covering an area of 23 square kilometers, the reserve boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The last tiger in the area was recorded in 1948.

Jhalana opened its doors to tourists for the first time in December 2016, offering a unique opportunity to explore this vibrant ecosystem.

01

History

Jhalana is characterized by its dry deciduous forest landscape, which typically remains arid most of the year. Trees in this region shed their leaves during the dry season, transforming into lush greenery during the monsoons. The dominant vegetation includes juliflora (Prosopis juliflora) and khejri (Prosopis cineraria). Originally planted to provide firewood for local villagers, juliflora trees, however, hinder the growth of other grasslands and trees. The slanted valleys of the reserve boast a richer variety of local flora, such as dhak (Butea monosperma), salar (Boswellia serrata), dhonk (Anogeissus pendula), and kumta (Acacia senegal), contributing to the biodiversity of the area.

Flora

The Jhalana Leopard Safari is home to over 40 leopards, including 8 cubs! Beyond these majestic cats, the reserve offers sightings of striped hyenas, Indian palm civets, desert and jungle cats, desert foxes, jackals, porcupines, jungle rats, monitor lizards, mongooses, sambar deer, spotted deer (chital), blue bulls (nilgai), and a variety of snakes.

Bird enthusiasts can also spot an array of avian species, including the Indian pitta, dusky eagle, owls, and spotted owlets among others, making Jhalana a diverse wildlife.

03

Fauna

The Jhalana Leopard Reserve welcomes visitors year-round, from January 1st to December 31st, uniquely remaining open even during the monsoon season when most other wildlife reserves in the country are closed.

While the Jhalana Leopard Safari offers a rewarding experience at any time, the optimal period to visit is from September to April. During these months, the weather is pleasant and nature is fully vibrant, greatly enhancing the scenic beauty of the reserve and providing the best conditions for spotting the majestic leopards and other diverse wildlife.
